  2. Graston, ART, Functional Soft Tissue, Functional Taping
    • Graston and ART are soft tissue disciplines that involve the breaking up of muscle contracture and adhesion in order to improve overall function.
    • Graston Technique ®:  The Graston Technique on a patient's shoulder Graston is a remarkable procedure that allows us to detect and treat areas of “scar tissue” or adhesions in muscles, tendons, and ligaments that can lead to pain and dysfunction.  In the healing process our body attempts to repair muscles, tendons and ligaments with “scar tissue”, much like the scar that forms on the skin when you have scraped or banged your knee.  As you can imagine, that scar tissue is not as strong and flexible as normal, healthy, undamaged tissue.  Over time we can have a build up of this fibrous scar tissue, particularly in the muscles, tendons, and ligaments that get lots of use.  The Graston Technique on a patient's back This can lead to pain and dysfunction because this replacement tissue lacks the strength and flexibility of healthy tissue (in some areas it may even mat down and entrap a nerve).  The Graston Technique® allows us to better detect and treat these areas because it uses stainless steel instruments that glide along a patient’s muscle, tendons, or ligaments and acts like a “scar tissue” stethoscope.  When knots or bands of scar tissue are encountered, both the doctor and the patient sense a restriction or granular feeling.  The instrument can then be used to “break up” this restriction or adhesion.  Stretching exercises are then used to promote realignment of the fibers so that they behave more like normal, healthy tissue.  The Graston Technique on a patient's backThe benefit of Graston is not only in detection of restrictions or adhesions, but also in the amount of improvement that takes place in a short amount of time.  When Graston Technique® is coupled with the necessary strengthening and stretching exercises, it provides a great aid to the chiropractic adjustment and the patient gets better much quicker and more completely.
    • ART:  Active Release Techniques®, or ART, is a non-invasive massage based treatment used to correct conditions arising from the following: overuse, repetitive stress injuries, sports injuries, general aches and pains, and many other chronic or acute conditions.  ART technique effectively treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves.  Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently using the Active Release Technique.  ART is based on scientific evidence that soft tissues such as muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue develop adhesions after cumulative injuries. Adhesions alter the motion of muscles or joints, resulting in a variety of symptoms, including pain, weakness, reduced range of motion, numbness and tingling.  ART breaks down the scar tissue and adhesions that have formed within or between these soft tissues, thus restoring full function and range of motion, leaving nerve and muscle tissue free to function properly and without pain.
    • Functional Soft Tissue
      • A branch of each technique derived specifically to target the movement(s) that a patient is having difficulty with.  For example in the picture we see a patient being treated for knee pain.  More specifically, the patient is being treated for knee pain with resistance applied in open chain extension.  Using this approach has helped us to target the exact biomechanical dysfunction associated with the patient’s ailments. Functional Soft Tissue Treatment for Knee Pain
    • Functional Taping is a system that gives the muscles targeted an added edge in order to avoid further injury.  It also helps provide facilitation of lymph flow, which is commonly used to treat swelling in acute phases of injury.  Two main techniques are used to in functional tapping.
      • The first technique gives the patient the opportunity to have support while maintaining full range of motion. This allows the individual to have normal physical activity by assisting in the activation of musculature in the affected areas.
      • The second technique, which is most commonly used in the acute stage of an injury, helps prevent overuse or over-contraction of the injured muscle while stimulating an increased lymph flow in the injured tissue.
      • Both techniques were used on the athletes in the recent 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing China. Functional Taping Treatment for Knee Pain
    • Body Dynamix still offers the traditional structural athletic tapping techniques.  These goals may include restricting the motion of the injured joint, compressing soft tissue to prevent swelling, supporting the involved anatomy, or serving as a splint.  Taping may also be used to prevent injury or re-injury. When we select which taping method to employ, we take into consideration the individual needs of that athlete.
